Over the past 10 years people have gone more and more to the major stores and less to the bait and tackle shops. Many bait and tackle shops in Indiana and across the USA have gone out of business due to the glitz and glammer of the major stores. The prices are usually the same but the people and the major fishing tackle companies have forgotten the ones who made fishing the sport that it is today. I personally have tried to get the major manufacturers to list local bait and tackle shops on their websites as authorized retailers of their products. They won't, but they will however list everyone of the major outfitters and retailers in the nation on their websites. Pushing the local bait and tackle shops further and further into bankruptcy. Quick Bass fishing tricks for fishermen.

Dark color to Black spinnerbaits are good for overcast and night fishing for bass.
Light and bright to Chartreuse colored spinnerbaits during a bright sunny days. After casting let your spinnerbait fall for a few seconds then do a slow retrieve. Always test your spinnerbait next to your boat or along a pier to see how fast you need to crank your reel to provide your best action for your lure. When in the warmer waters bass are usually deep due to the low oxygen content in the shallows. I recommend using a diver to get down to where they are lurking. Bass are an aggressive hunter and need the cool water to supply them with more oxygen for hunting. When the waters are warm they are less aggressive and tend to move more slowly. Always search for bass in areas where they can hide such as stumps, submerged debris and grassy areas in coves.

Fall crappie fishing in Indiana's Lake Summit

Over the last few weeks I have been fishing at Lake Summit. The low water level was alarming as with most bodies of water here in Indiana. It seems that the water levels have drop dramatically this year and the temperature of the water is quite warm. Crappie season will be starting soon with fall coming on, the crappies I saw in lake Summit were of decent size. For the fisherman without a boat I recommend going to the fishing pier on the south side of lake. Just below the pier you will find some nice crappie's. According to locals the DNR dropped some Christmas trees under the pier and slightly to the north of the pier along the shore. So if your heading out crappie fishing soon in Indiana. Give it a few cold nights to cool the waters and checkout Lake Summit. Locals recommend a red headed, white bodied jig for crappies. I was able to pull some myself with a white bodied, chartreuse headed jig. Good luck and happy crappie fishing.

For 18 years Edward McCullough and Sandra McCullough have helped thousand's in the community of Indianapolis by organizing a community outreach center and food pantry for the needy. Mr. McCullough is a Disabled Vietnam Veteran, a Mason and a Minister and Mrs. McCullough is a cancer survivor, a great cook and one of the sweetest people I know. Mrs McCullough decided after her husband retired from working for the government to convert their barn into a bait shop with a lake to provide a safe & healthy place to fish. Their land has an underground spring that would help retain the water levels. Soon after Mr McCullough retired, Mrs McCullough was struck down with cancer, exhausting all their savings on medical bills. During this time they were conned by a contractor who said he would dig the lake if they agreed for him to put a 6" sewer line along the property for his business. The contractor put the line through the middle of their property instead, when the McCullough's went to ask about the building of the lake, the contractor threatened to call the police for trespassing on his property. The motives were clear, the contractor wished to purchase the McCullough's property and if the baitshop failed then he would be able to buy the land at a cheap rate. The McCullough's plagued with cancer and depression have all but lost hope. Mr. McCullough was robbed by automatic weapons a few months ago and the family almost shut the doors after celebrating 10 years in business. I(one of 3 sons)have been running the shop most of the time since then and built a website for them, but the revenue to build such a place is just not there. My parents have dedicated their lives to helping people all over Indiana and even some of the Katrina victims who decided to move to Indiana. With the increasing problems in the body's of water (Giest Reservoir and White River) in the Indianapolis area it would be nice to have a safe and healthy place to fish in Indianapolis again. My father who is a minister would also like to perform marriage ceremonies around the lake and have a playground built for the neighborhood children. I'm not asking for handouts or charity! Paddlefish Poachers - From WRTV6

INDIANAPOLIS -- Ohio River paddlefish, whose eggs are sought by poachers as a lucrative source of caviar, are being protected by new regulations from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR approved emergency rules that include limiting the catching of the paddlefish from Nov. 15 to April 15 and a minimum size of 34 inches from eye to tail fork.

"Our recent investigation clearly revealed that existing regulations are insufficient to protect this unique resource," DNR director Robert Carter Jr. said Monday. "Unfortunately, the high market prices for paddlefish caviar do not encourage resource conservation.

"The escalating harvest pressure threatens to take paddlefish faster than they can be replaced, which could lead to a shortage we intend to prevent," he said.

A two-year investigation has led to arrests of more than 20 people on charges including illegal taking of paddlefish, money laundering, and racketeering and corrupt business influence, Carter said.

Paddlefish in the Mississippi River Basin, including the Ohio River, were targeted by poachers because of a decline in traditional sturgeon caviar sources in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, the DNR said.

Most females require 10 to 12 years to mature and may spawn only once every two to three years. A mature female paddlefish may carry several pounds of eggs, which can bring up to $250 per pound or more, the department said.

The emergency rules, valid for one year and then renewable for another year, also prohibit the snagging of paddlefish by people with sport-fishing licenses. They also prohibit the use of gill nets and trammel nets during the closed paddlefish season, and standardize a method for commercial fishers to check paddlefish for the presence of eggs.

These are the facts, during the last few years the catalpa worm has been reduced in population due to mosquito control measures, pesticides and hurricane Katrina who blew ours off the trees when she hit Louisiana and has yet to recover. The pesticides used to control mosquito's kills the catalpa worms when they are on the trees and when they are in the larvae state under the trees. This is not the only problem we have encountered, when crop runoff from farmland flows near the trees the population is also reduced. Precision Cricket Measuring

Here at The Bait Barn we have taken the time to precisely measure the amount of crickets distributed from our tube. Taking into consideration that the average cricket is 3/4 of inch in length and 1/4" of an inch in width, using mathematical calculations we have determined exactly where the lines in the 1" diameter tube should be. The first line is drawn at 2 and 1/4" of the tube indicating there are 25 crickets in the tube, the second line is 4 and 1/2" inches indicating there are 50 crickets in the tube. The tube measures 9" long so when someone purchases a Full tube of crickets they actually get about 110 crickets. Now you maybe asking yourself what does all this mean for you the consumer, nothing really their just crickets! We got robbed!

Yesterday on June 22 2007. My father was watching the shop and things were going pretty slow. Then all of a sudden two hood robbers strategically positioned themselves in the store. Then over powered my father before he could react. They struck my father to the ground and held automatic weapons on him while robbing us and destroying our security equipment before their escape. Thank god my father wasn't injured. This is the third time in The Bait Barn history we have been robbed. Today I was notified that Pflueger fishing has added us as a link to purchase products from. Just trying to make a living

This David McCullough, I came back last year to help my parents run this bait shop in Indianapolis, IN. They originally had plans to restore a lake behind our property that a company years ago filled in. When one of the companies tried to buy us out my father refused to sell.(This isn't just our shop it's our home)So intern the company behind us ran a sewer line straight through our property to prevent us from having the lake restored and ultimately destroying any chance of expanding our business. The motive was clear if the lake isn't restored the under ground spring in our property is building up yearly and eventually will destroy any and all foundations around the spring until the water can be contained. We just filed a complaint with the city of Indianapolis since there was no easement or final inspection completed on the sewer line. My goal is to get this line removed from our property and install the lake. The DNR has given its blessing in hopes to get the lake dug out. The state has submitted a fine to the company behind us for the unauthorized sewer line. You may be saying right now...What does this have to do with the Bait Barn Blog? It's simple....We need your business! We have slashed prices to compete with the BIG BOYS around town and online.
